In other news, the debut of  my song Broken went so well! Thanks to my partner, Jada Parks for her photography and inspiration and to Nick Peay for the perfect music! Artography was such an awesome and fun event produced by Kenn Parks, and I was very happy with the response! I wish I had set up a webcam as suggested by my friend Tim to stream people’s responses to the web. Some people were creeped out to the point of being unable to look in my direction. One woman leaned in to tell me that I was very brave. Others let me know how much they enjoyed it, and I met some really awesome artists, creatives. Kenn did a great job at creating an event for people to mingle, appreciate art, and I foresee some awesome collaborations coming out of it. I enjoyed it immensely and can’t wait to do more living exhibits in the future. On another note, I’ve found myself in a place where people that used to scare me with bullying or by holding their approval/love over my head no longer scare me. I’ ve found them raise their heads and try to surface  with the type of behavior that would have used to make me give in or try to defend myself or try to make everything “ok” . I’ve found it quite liberating to realize that I’ve come to a place where I don’t really care what they think.  I’ve found that the more I tried to shine, the more of a target I became. Somewhere in my journey, I overcame a need to prove myself to haters, people who wanted to hold me back and decided to let my actions speak for me. I am human like everyone else on a path of learning, trying to figure out who I am, go for my heart’s desires and learn how to best be me. Part of that process includes falling, making mistakes. We all do. If we didn’t, none of us would learn to walk..we’d still be crawling around on the ground.  Some of us aren’t happy with just learning to walk. We want to fly. The further you are from the ground, the harder you may find yourself falling.  It’s far too easy to weigh ourselves down with our own judgment and criticism.   The last thing we need is a bully or someone we trust/care about to continually grab on to our legs and try to pull us back down. The truth is it has never really been them holding us down that keeps us from flying…it’s our failure to push off of them and leave them behind. It sucks that they are lonely where they are, but maybe if you continue to rise, they will see that they can, too.   My favorite quote this year has been “Do not speak about your greatest gifts…Leave the talking to others.”  I’m trying to make that my mantra.  You’re either for me or against me and if you’re against me, the past is your home and I’m not looking down / back as I rise. The people I now find myself surrounded by and consider friends that have shown  me real love/support, inspire me to continue to rise, and actually care about my well being/happiness and I theirs  are more precious to me than gold, and the others are..well, people….people I once knew.   It’s hard to say goodbye and walk away from the habit/desire of giving others your power and letting them make you feel bad about yourself or scare you into giving up on flying, but definitely a hurdle worth leaping over.  So, raise a glass with me and toast to the liberation of saying good bye to the fears of yesterday!!

Everyone has worked so hard on it, and we only had a month to put together this full length show – one month to put together the script, the act, the costumes, and the choreography..Prepare to be astounded <3

We also got to do a fun spot on WFPK with Laura Shine. I had to rush straight from where I was doing costume to the radio station, and then to dress rehearsal, so it was tremendous walking down 4th st live! in the cold wearing an outfit that was barely there from the waist down….All the fellas said hello to me on the way, though. ha! Mike Nusser was wearing his fedora for the show with skulls across the front, so he looked like some kind of pimp. Al Holbrook and Mike got to each play a song on the air, and all I could do was think about how awesome it is to have such talent in this show.

This year is only a week old and already it has been fantastic and beautiful, stressful and terrifying, keeping me up nights with it’s desire to feed and grow. I think we’re going to get along rather well, and this year is going to grow up to change the world as we know it <3

I was so amazed to make such an impression on a young boy who evidently loves “lady gaga, pink and Divinity Rose”….I was floored when his family told me that.

I’ll be honest. It scared me a little. The idea of someone liking me enough to have a tattoo saying so is a BIG deal….I’ve had someone tattoo my logo on their leg before, but to see someone as young as Abel look up to me that way…well…that is even more of a big deal …I want everyone to be their own hero and to show me what they’ve got…Show me their unique awesomeness…So, it’s weird to be in a place where others look at you like a hero or something special. I bet we are all a hero to someone…and don’t even know it.

Then, I look back at when I was a child…in foster homes, and how my stuffed animals lined my bed at night creating a protective wall around me and I imagined that one was Mr. T, another the guys from Mash, another was Optimus Prime, one was Snake Eyes from GI Joe, and so on…..When I was Abel’s age, I had an entire sticker book full of Michael Jackson stickers. Having those characters to believe in carried me through hard times, and even as adults, it helps to have someone to look up to and believe in…So, I guess it’s important to have heroes. I only hope that I can live up to the tremendous responsibility, young Abel ( and Sarah). Thank you for inspiring me to be better. I am truly honored.

I have to start by saying how grateful I am for all of the support, love, and blessings I find myself surrounded by. I am reminded time and time again that true beauty is found when people join together to accomplish more. You are all so wonderful and amazing. I have to pinch myself to remind myself that I’m dreaming the most wonderful dream ever.

Speaking of beautiful people, I received a beautiful gift last week from Matthew Blake Wallace. A video documentation of a peace mural that some beautiful people from Louisville joined together to create on Halloween weekend. Matthew did an awesome job editing it, and his music is perfect for it.

I’ve been busy preparing for my book release, huge release show so it’s been a while since I posted. So, there’s a lot to share. Sorry if it’s too much at once.

I wanted to share some photos by Taylor Woods from the photo shoot for my first Graphic Novel… I hope you enjoy them. Taylor is always a pleasure to work with.

I find myself in the midst of a whirlwind of activity, doing my best to stay centered – the eye of the storm. I’ve got a lot of shows coming up with Sub Rosa that will be fun. We’ve got a space theme in May for derby, and we revisit the zombies in June for our one year anniversary of making the zombie cowgirl video and being at Diamonds for one year. Can you believe that it has been that long?

On a more sacred note, I’m excited to be moving forward with my own art as well.

As my last post pointed out, I’m about to release my first graphic novel in the “Diaries of a Godling” series. The series is really about learning to be ruler of my world. To be ruler of your world, you really just need to draw out the boundaries of your world, then journey forth to build upon it.

Last week, I was asked to speak at Ivy Tech and had a blast doing so! (if you’d like me to come and speak to your school, church, group – don’t hesitate to let me know.) One of the people in attendance came to me afterward and said the muse hit her while she was listening to what I was saying. She had to start writing. I’m so proud of her, I wanted to share it with all of you.

Writer/Performer/Producer/Promoter Divinity Rose is releasing and signing copies of Diaries of a Godling: The Promise on March 14,2010 from 12:34 pm – 2:34 pm at The Great Escape on Bardstown Road in Louisville, Kentucky. This is the first graphic novel in her Diaries of a Godling series.

Divinity is a poet/performer with an unusual background including foster homes, teenage homelessness, abuse and more. She is now known for her writing/performing in Louisville and also for creating, producing Sub Rosa: The Gypsie Courtyard, which has become a staple in the Louisville arts and entertainment scene. She also speaks to high schools, colleges, and other groups about the creative process and creating your dreams. As she found her way to creating her own identity, she wanted to be able to encourage others in doing so by sharing her journey. The Diaries of a Godling series allows her to share the many things she loves (art, photography, poetry, collage) as she shares the lessons that have led her out of her nightmares and into her dreams.

The term “Godling” comes from the idea of a baby spirit learning to grow up. Like a gosling who aspires to fly, finding the way to ruling your own world can be an awkward process. The books are like scrap books of her writings, memories, art, and visions. As the series progresses, a story unfolds. The story blossoms in more than one medium, though. She is also releasing online videos that are a part of an online game that invites readers/viewers to solve puzzles to move further through the pathways of her mind/spirit.

Most of you know my delight in transforming “trial” to “gift”. This past week gave me a great opportunity to do just that.

I had dinner with friends on Wednesday, and my phone stopped working for no reason (I blame Mercury). On the way out the door, I thought, “This would be a great time to be stuck on the side of the road (with no phone).”

Sure enough. On the way home, Cody and I were mid-laughter when a loud noise interrupted our fun. We pulled over and the tire was FLAT.

Being in the middle of nowhere on the x-way in the middle of the night with a child and without a phone or spare (stupid, I know – but I already used the extra wheel I had a couple months ago) was not an ideal situation for me. So, I did the only thing I could..drove on the rim to a public place (which just so happened to be a few miles away), so I could use their phone to call my roadside assistance. The grating noise of the rim on the road as we drove was excruciating to both my ears and heart.

So, lesson number 1: Replace spare tires immediately – because there is nothing more frustrating than driving on a rim, knowing how awful that is or having to call a tow truck for something you know how to fix.

Once we were home safe, I found that I would not be able to replace it until this week. This gave me a perfect opportunity to catch up on “at desk” work, and I was super productive with an excuse to not feel guilty about not attending social events.

Also, here’s a heartwarming and ear wrenching gift: A bunch of us got together at Sub Rosa: The Gypsie Courtyard and sang All you Need is Love by The Beatles. As you can see, this was unrehearsed and spur of the moment.  It was tons of fun, though. We hope it fills you up with as much cheer as it did us!

And as I push to have my band ready for our March 14 debut, I received a very interesting surprise. A fan of mine has put together a street team! I hadn’t thought of it before, so I guess it’s a good thing someone else lit the fire under my butt!   She suggested I think of something nice to do with or for them, so I went ahead and created a section of my site for Street Team Members.  If you’ve appreciated and followed these writings and  want to help me spread the word about Diaries of a Godling or Sagun (my new band), you can join the street team (I am looking for captains in different areas of the globe). I am so grateful for the last year and the many blessings it held.

I realized that with Sub Rosa, we held close to 100 shows, featured over 100 musicians, filmmakers, visual artists, comedians, and poets, inspired the sale of hundreds of dollars in local original art, music, inspired the community to pay more attention to local original art, saved a life, volunteered, created murals, videos, music and more together, witnessed love and the beginning of relationships, held each other through tough times, saved people’s stuff from being lost, helped bring awareness to local businesses, and had members gain more media attention. I am so proud and grateful for everyone who has helped this dream for our city’s art and entertainment industry to unfold!!

The transition between years seems to have been a rough one. The last couple weeks have been even more crazy than usual.

“Oh Divinity, that’s what you always say.”

No, really. Everything from murder* to setting boundaries to accidental death to finalizing debut dates of my first book and the band.

*by murder, I don’t mean I murdered, I meant it affected a close friend.

Everywhere around me people seemed to be dealing with loss, with change, with letting go..and most importantly..with being vulnerable with each other.

One of the hardest things I’ve had to learn is the strength of vulnerability..to not be afraid to be angry, or cry, or be scared in front of others…It is okay to ask for help.

One of the biggest steps in growth for me was to attend a public open mic (With lots of friends in the audience) and read a letter I had written to my mother. I was terrified signing up, because I knew I was going to break down in the middle of it, and I did..but I made myself do it, and I made myself finish. I got that pain out in a circle of people I knew AND strangers. When I was done, the room responded by rushing the stage and smothering me with so much love, I was buried and had to say into the mic that was still in my hand, “Guys, I can’t breathe!”

Being able to be that naked in front of people is freeing. It’s terrifying, but once you step through that veil of fear, you realize the universe will respond to you and give you all the help/love you ever need (though maybe not from the people you think it should come from).

I am more grateful than ever for the life ahead of me, the amazing things I get to do everyday, and I have found the best motivator of all to be changing the words “I have to” to “I get to”.

The things I get to do now and in the next few months have me so excited, my face could melt.

I get to continue working with my new band, which we have named “Sagun” (pronounced Sah-goon). We are pushing to be ready for our debut March 14 at a powerhouse show called “Poets, Prophets, and Punks” that I am producing. I get to host a bunch of AWESOME shows with Sub Rosa including Pin Ups and Hot Rods on January 30, celebrating my dear friends’ Porscha and Pam Newman’s birthdays and the cd release party/mardi gras party on February 13 with Revenge of Ricky Williams and Squallis Puppeteers.

I am so excited for 2010. There are so many wonderful experiences I want to give myself and others. How about you?

I ended up with 14 shows this month! Diamonds, Psychomania, Carly Rae’s, Oshea’s, two at an adult daycare facility, a halloween parade in addition to a speaking engagement with high schoolers, a two day film contest, and the creation of a huge peace mural. In addition to that, I was gifted with an awesome new apartment that needed some work, so with the help of some amazing friends, I’ve been scrubbing and painting and trying to get it into something more livable than a maze of boxes and paint cans. You could say I’m the monster in the labrynth right now, but amidst this chaotic energy I’ve found a great peace. Things are really shaping up!

The real peace has come from settling into this new home. Believe it or not, I’ve found time for lovely meditation by candlelight, and I’ve realized I’m doing it! Like a kid on a two-wheel bicycle without training wheels for the first time, I’m running through October screaming with excitement: “I’m doing it! I’m doing it!!”

I realize that I am now living the life I was dreaming of. Three years ago, I sold or gave away most of my stuff and set off into the great unknown to follow the calling I heard from within. I spent the next few years pulling myself apart to discover the things holding me back. It was shifting, transient, painful, frustrating and nightmarish at times. I got so involved in that journey, I felt stuck in living for the day when that dream would come true. With time to sit and look around, I realized I am now there. I have reached the place I set out to find. I can only go and grow from here, but it is an amazing feeling to realize that I am now the person I once only dreamed of being, surrounded by things and people I love: things, people, circumstances of value that mean something to me.

I’ve met others along the way: Magical people with amazing dreams. A good portion of them are coming together Halloween Weekend to create a shining communication of peace to my hometown Louisville, Kentucky.

On the Sub Rosa front, I’ve reconnected with an old friend, and thanks to Terry, the winner of the costume contest on Halloween will win tickets to his upcoming show featuring Gwar.

In my quest, I’d say that one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that freedom can be found within boundaries. The difference between being free or not depends on who has created your boundaries.

As an artist, I realize that I am a girl who is fascinated with potentials and possibilities. I am in love with ideas. The problem with that is that ideas are fleeting. To be any more than that, you have to give them form, and form begins with boundaries. Whose boundaries are you flowing within?

Every ending leads to a new beginning, and Halloween weekend marks just such a transition. As Louisville sees the end of the haunted season, it celebrates the opening of a new season: The Season of Peace. Put in motion by the School of Metaphysics, a huge mural will be created on the side of Amazing Grace Whole Foods and Nutrition. This monumental interactive event is a collaborative effort by an impressive cross section of Louisville artists, businesses, entertainers and non-profits. It is the first of eleven weekly events to celebrate what the School of Metaphysics calls the Season of Peace (November, December).

From sun-up to sun-down on October 31 and November 1, the parking lot to the west of Amazing Grace will be a bustle of painting, entertainment, activity, and fellowship. The local community is encouraged to come and enjoy concessions and entertainment as the artists work on the mural that will depict many of our world’s recognizable peace leaders. The purpose of the mural is to create a central communication of peace in our community, because visual art is a universal language that transcends cultural, lingual and other barriers. There will be music, interactive art activities for families, and an opportunity to sign the global document, the Universal Peace Covenant, which states, “We call upon each individual to create and foster a personal vision for peace.”

Other Season of Peace events include laughter yoga and an international potluck for peace. Each of the 11 events lead up to the Universal Hour of Peace on New Years Eve.

To document this moment in Louisville history, there will be a photographer, a video team, and participants will be listed alongside sponsors on a painted scroll on the wall to the side of the mural.
